Plum Values and Workplace Wellness

by | Jul 21, 2022

What sets Plum apart from the other fruit in the basket?

Think about the best place that you’ve worked. What made it stand out? What did the company value? Was workplace wellness emphasized? Regardless of your answers, Plum strives to be that place for our employees. That is why we lean on our values and rituals to cultivate a positive and supportive work environment. Our values are rooted in these 5 key principles: Be You Authentically, Less is More, Openness and Transparency, Get the Job Done Right, and Missionaries not Mercenaries. These values are then played out in our two rituals: Wellness Wednesday and Team Week.

Values:

Being yourself is important to Plum. How boring would it be if every employee was the same? We value differences and want our employees to be as proud of them as we are. Being supportive of employees’ Authentic Selves opens the doors for Openness and Transparency, another key Plum value. Problems are solved more quickly when employees feel like they can be open and transparent about where they are having trouble. This is what allows them to get the Job Done Right. If the job is done right, our co-owner customers should have an easy and simplified path to co-ownership hence; Less is More. Last but certainly not least, we strive to be Missionaries, not Mercenaries. Life is short, we want to do bold things that will change the world with nice, talented people that we care about and can count on, not ones who are simply chasing the money because, well, money usually wins that race.

Rituals:

As much as saying values matter, seeing them play out through our rituals is important. Talk is cheap right? (so can being a vacation home owner- relatively). Plum’s two rituals are Wellness Wednesday and Team week. Every other Wednesday we close the office at 2:00pm because we believe in normalizing wellness. Employees are encouraged to take this time to do something for their mental or physical well being. Some examples are scheduling an overdue doctors appointment, engaging in therapy (#normalizementalhealth) or going for a long walk with a friend. Whatever it may be, it is time for the employee to take care of themselves amid a hardworking schedule.

Team Week is broken down into three parts: science of the team, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and #PlumFun. Science of the team focuses on learning the best practices in team cohesion and collaborative working. We value creating a positive company culture and believe it is important to learn about practices that increase the happiness levels surrounding teamwork. We test our newly acquired knowledge by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. By making a long term commitment to the Habitat for Humanity affiliates where our employees live, we work together in the pursuit of eradicating poverty housing in our community. And at the end of each day, we wrap up with some #PlumFun. After all, who doesn’t like having fun?
